The company provides a professional photographer to instruct throughout the trip, to advise on new techniques during workshops, and to offer ideas for improvements in your photos during review sessions. Their itineraries are designed specifically to help photographers find the very best images.
Set on a ridge above a wide valley that creates a natural amphitheatre for game viewing – including my unusually dramatic lunch-time encounter with lions – the lodge itself consists of a series of permanent tents that stretch out like shiny studs pressed into the fabric of the hillside. Suddenly, the animals you came to see are there in abundance: water buffalos, giraffes, antelope, ostriches.
Despite this, concerns for elephant safety are rising. To help protect them, an ambitious trans-frontier conservation area involving Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia has recently been established. When the dry season starts in June, the shrunken Chobe River attracts thousands of elephants.
In the end the Maasai got so carried away that they continued on until well after the sun had disappeared; the men later joining us around the fire, viewing colour replays on a video recording. From Nduara, we took a small flight to Arusha, the main entry and exit point for visitors to either Ngorongoro or Serengeti. Our time in the air offered a moment of reflection on all we had seen and a real sense of the scale of it, something that you simply cannot grasp from the ground. I smiled as endless lines of ant-sized wildebeest stretched out below me, my camera packed full of the memories of the dusty magic that I had just been a part of.
In a population 30% white and 70% of color, reverse discrimination occurs for jobs. There are 11 official languages in South Africa. We learn that when a man erects a hut on your front lawn, after 72 hours you must allow him to remain or find him a new place to settle. Most speak Afrikaans, a language derived from the Bushmen and Dutch.
It remained calm but rage could occur within seconds. One client reached out to pet it as if it were the barnyard cow. For free time we enjoyed a river cruise among hippos and hiked on marked trails. No where else have I been able to walk among wild eland and zebra in the bush like I did here! Several here had been semi-domesticated and suddenly approached our jeeps.
This was just a taste of what Africa holds but here we obtained the best photography ever within mere feet of lions, elephants, rhino and countless more animals. The Cape buffalo is the most dangerous animal on earth due to its unpredictability. It’s the only animal a Masai warrior will run from.
The wildebeest do what they do, but the human “migration” supposedly has rules to ensure Africa’s natural cycle is not disturbed too much. At the peak, between July and September, 8,000 people – each of whom pay an $80 entrance fee – are to be found somewhere in the reserve’s 1,510sq km every day.
At night all scattered to the famous V&A Waterfront with its plethora of pubs and cafes. The highlights included a cruise to Seal Island, a hike among thousands of penguins and funicular up to Cape of Good Hope where the Atlantic and Indian oceans merge. There were many great Kodak moments.
2 If you’ve found the composition you want, but you are waiting for your subject to pounce, you can lock the focus and exposure levels. Now wait for the animal to pose more agreeably. These locks persist between shots, so no time is wasted refocusing when you need to shoot repeatedly. Tap and hold the screen on the focus point.
If you are first into the Siq, as dawn breaks, you can climb to the Deir (or “monastery”) in an hour and be on your way out before the rush. Or take the “Petra by night” tour which sees 2,000 candles line the canyon, before you emerge with the Treasury bathed in candlelight and Bedouin music. The Siq is the high-sided narrow canyon that exits at the Treasury building.
Drama was virtually guaranteed. My safari was divided into three stages. First we were to travel to the Ngorongoro Crater; then down to Ndutu where the main calving activity takes place; and finally into the Maasai lands of Loliondo, just outside the reserve’s boundaries. The area they choose falls within the southern Serengeti, but within the boundaries of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where we were heading, along with the greatest concentration of predators anywhere in Africa, all arriving in search of feeble newborn animals and weakened adults. Here, we intended to do some walking, “macro” photography (extremely close-up images) and also spend time in a Maasai village.
We were perched on the eastern rim of the crater at Sopa Lodge, too high up to see any wildlife, but at the perfect height to take in the magnitude of this unique environment. It wasn’t dry and yellow as I’d imagined, but a vibrant green with a bright lake glowing in the evening light at the centre of the basin. Standing here, looking out over the Ngorongoro Crater, provided a sweet sense of anticipation that first safari night. As we passed endless shantytowns of tin shacks, we understood why the unemployment rate was at 39%. This is the wealthiest nation in Africa, but its resources are stretched due to the influx of 50,000 refugees each year from neighboring nations.
After breakfast check out hotel and proceed to board a flight to George Airport Johannesburg. Arrival in Sun City, please refer to the hotel. Arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa, the transfer Kingdom of Pleasure – Sun City. Stay overnight in Sun City. All other days are free to enjoy the various activities offered at the Sun City complex.
4 HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and is found in the Options box on screen. It’s helpful in sunny safari environments, quickly snapping three shots at varying exposures and combining them. This creates a noticeably better image with high contrast and detail, even in shadows.
They can, when the mood takes them, but very quiet and move incredibly gracefully, like grey ghosts. Adult elephants have no predators so they have no need to blend in. And yet I can recount numerous occasions where I’ve been in a stationary game drive vehicle less than 20 metres from an elephant and not spotted it. Clearly they were in this sort of mood whilst we were at Sanbona!
The finale was a cacophony of excited trumpeting from Jabu and Thembi, reverberating all around us.
Okavango Delta (Will Whitford) But this isn’t just a gimmick for tourists. With the money raised by the charity, 12-14-year-old local children come to the bush for two days, learning how to live with their pachyderm neighbours, increasing their understanding and helping to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
There has been talk of building a mountain highway and even a cable car. Quotas and restrictions, if they come with lost income, won’t happen for Machu Picchu just yet. With other jobs, related tourism and support industries, the economic value of Machu Picchu is huge. Entrance fees, along with income from the Inca Trail brings the Peruvian economy more than $10m a year. Helicopter flights have been authorised, but ecologists fear their impact on Andean condors.
Visit Kristen Bosch Botanical Garden on the way back to the hotel. Overnight at hotel in Cape Town. Enjoy a short trip to see the seals in Hout Bay. After breakfast, proceed for full day tour of the Cape Peninsula. Later continue your drive to Simon’s Town, where hundreds of Jackass Penguins wait to welcome you at Boulders Beach. At Cape Point enjoy a stunning landscape of the southern most point of West Africa, where two powerful ocean currents in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean wash ashore.
The rainy season is often a quiet time for tourists. However, for photographers this is an ideal time to visit. The air is clear and everything is green and lush, creating a contrasting backdrop to the abundance of wildlife. We lined up our tripods and snapped all the way through to sunset.
Unlike easy-to-rope-off heritage buildings that tourists want to box-tick before they die, must-see natural ecosystems such as the Serengeti, the Red Sea Reef, Mount Kilimanjaro or the Ngorongoro Crater are struggling to find new survival strategies for increasing global appetites.
The camp joins a cluster of luxury boutique properties marketed under Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition label. These include Necker, his private Caribbean island (the Great House of which is due to be reopened this autumn after a catastrophic fire in 2011); the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve in South Africa; The Lodge in Verbier; and the Kasbah Tamadot in the Atlas Mountains.
It looked like a spectators’ car park at a busy Nevada rodeo, where the best way to get up close to the animals is simply to stand on the roof of your SUV and whip out a camera lens the size of a drain pipe.
The next departures are on 17 September, and in February and September 2015. From US$3,950 (£2,469), excluding flights. Highlights include visiting a community anti-poaching project and wildlife sanctuary, and lunch with the “Space for Giants” team. Minimum sponsorship is US$500 (£313) with a target of US$2,500 (£1,563).
We passed the electric gates to see herds of gazelle, water buck, antelope and wildebeest. The landscape was a giant lawn for the omnivore wildlife to satisfy their appetites. We arrived to luxurious Kariega, a private reserve with an abundance of game that was a world apart. Set in 14,000 lush acres bordered by the Bushmans rivers, it was stunning.
uk) which offers three nights at Sanctuary Baines’ Camp and three nights at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero from £3,845pp. The price is based on two people sharing and includes South African Airways flights from the UK to Botswana via Johannesburg, local light aircraft flights, full board, and scheduled game activities. Getting there
Sue Watt travelled with Rainbow Tours (020 7666 1250; rainbowtours.
Driving away from the crowded crossings towards Tanzania, he showed it was still possible to move sensitively among the migrating herds. Joseph Koyie doesn’t believe the Mara is under threat. However, an ecosystem such as the Maasai Mara doesn’t have Petra’s options. For now, solutions such as these can help to an extent. Nevertheless, he wants the reserve’s long-term sustainability to come before short-term benefits. Then I saw it, a twitch of tawny fur, the top of an ear tuft: it was a cheetah, stalking the impala. Eventually it had worked itself into a small clump of scrub about 5 metres from the closest impala. What followed was fifteen minutes of exquisite torture as the cheetah inched closer and closer to the impala, displaying incredible patience, skill and camouflage.
They also visit Sanctuary’s camps, Baines’ and Stanley’s, the only two in the concession, to learn about the employment possibilities through tourism that wildlife brings to the Okavango Delta. Sanctuary Retreats’ guides take the children on game drives, aiming to lessen their fear of wildlife. To date, some 2,500 children have met these charismatic elephants and it’s hoped the message will spread like ripples in a lake.
In 1984, 6,000 people used the trail. The footfall of international visitors is eroding parts of the site. Walking the Inca Trail is supposed to be the symbolically perfect way of getting there (rather than using the railway from Cusco). It has now passed 100,000. By the Millennium it was 82,000. Add to that the fact that fuel used for cooking on the trail comes from local timber and recent forest fires, and Machu Picchu itself looks threatened.
Who knows why, but the whole build-up was still hugely exciting and a real highlight of the trip. A recessive gene causes their fur to be much paler than normal lions and caused them to be regarded as divine by indigenous people. Prized by hunters, and very rare anyway, they survive through rebreeding projects such as that at Sanbona.
The following morning whilst out on drive, we were lucky enough to find Sanbona’s most mythical animals, the white lions.
However, the creation of this new lodge is also part of a wider regional initiative designed to improve living standards. Mahali Mzuri, which means “beautiful place” in Swahili, is set in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, a tract of private land a bit bigger than the city of Manchester. Until recently, the area was divided into uneconomical smallholdings, owned by more than 250 Maasai families.
Here we are more a traveler than a tourist as we set out on safari changing hotels each night. Included in our group of 45 were a fighter pilot, 2 physicians, 2 psychoanalysts (who came in handy for me), mother/daughter, father/son, the uncle of Julia Roberts and one of my good friend whose passport stamps trump mine, Frank. We follow the Garden Route, the premier tour route preferred by locals.
There is a herd on the reserve but despite covering a lot of their usual territory we didn’t see them. So all in all we had some pretty good game viewing, especially as we were only there for about 24 hours! The one major animal that eluded us was the elephant. I’m not entirely surprised by this: although I joked earlier about not being able to spot the giraffes, they are at least slightly camouflaged – elephants are the biggest land animal and are a completely different colour to the surrounding bush.
By late evening return to your lodge. Return to your lodge in time for breakfast. Night at the inn in the Pilanesberg Reserve. Continues today in the beginning of morning game. Dinner will be served at your lodge. After lunch for afternoon game drive. The rest of the morning is free for leisure.
The next time the drama occurred, I would be ready. A keen photographer myself, I’d decided to try it out on a trip to northern Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with Capture Safaris, a specialist in this field. Paul Joynson-Hicks, renowned African wildlife photographer, was our teacher for the week. Photographic workshop safaris have become an increasingly popular option for holidaymakers – a version of point-and-shoot that is far more evolved than the hunting safaris that once lured colonial adventurers.
But how serious are the nation’s decision-makers about this? The private game reserves in the Kruger National Park of South Africa are variants of the same strategy. However, a Kenya government report recently estimated that although up to 70 per cent of the 108 camps and lodges in the Maasai Mara area were effectively unlicensed and not paying their share of the Mara’s upkeep in taxes, there were no plans to close them down. Is it simply to enforce tourism quotas – and to price most people out? In the short-term Kenya can’t afford such a gesture. Botswana’s safari industry has already chosen the high-end option.
Five top elephant conservation trips
100 miles for elephants, Kenya
Join a 100-mile sponsored walk around Kenya’s Kirisia Hills for UK charity Space for Giants (bit. ly/WalKenya), which was supported by the Independent Elephant Appeal. Elephant activities cost from £230pp. Over nine days, walking with Samburu guides and camel caravans, you’ll help fund wages, equipment, and scout training.
These research boats allowed us legally to get extremely close to whales. It was like seeing 2 motorcoaches rolling in the water. Our boat came upon two 50 ton whales mating. Another boat spotted 2 pods of 20 whales playing together. One was the size of Moby Dick that gracefully arced as the other slapped its flipper with a cascade of water.A zoologist and elephant trainer in the film industry, Doug helped the three recuperate and taught them commands. Now living in Sanctuary Retreats’ private concession in the Okavango Delta, through their charity Living with Elephants, the couple offer visitors an intimate morning with the animals, interacting and walking with them through the bush.
It might have escaped the attention of 16th-century Spanish Conquistadors, but it can’t escape the effects of 21st-century tourism. Peru’s city in the clouds, Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca citadel that was built in grey granite more than 600 years ago, is currently visited by a little more than 2,000 tourists a day.
It’s not like a private reserve in the Kruger or somewhere similar, where high game densities and decent numbers of vehicles out on game drive mean you’re going to almost be tripping over the Big Five. Moving onto the game, it should be pointed out that Sanbona is billed as a wilderness experience as much as a game experience. If you like wilderness, you can’t fail to be blown away as you drive across the reserve, seeing valleys and ridges unfold all the way to the horizon, all of them given over to conservation and reverting to their natural state.
” They look stunning, too, like space invaders: alien, yet organic. You could drive a 4×4 across the top of them, they’re so strong. In fact, to call them tents feels slightly misleading. The walls are made of fabric, but the roofs are taut skins of PVC, held in place by lattices of steel girders tethered to concrete footings. As Tarn Breedveld, the camp’s Australian-born general manager, puts it: “They’re the only tents I know of that need four-metre long pegs to hold them down.
So I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The first thing that struck me was the size, and isolation of the reserve. It’s 54,000 hectares in size. I really like to feel like I’ve got a slice of wilderness to myself, and Sanbona delivered this in spades. It’s difficult to put this into perspective, but I’ll try. So you’ve got a reserve bigger than the Isle of Wight, which you’re probably sharing with fewer people than live on your street! It’s over 200 square miles, which makes it about a third bigger than the Isle of Wight, and it only has three small lodges on it.
With thousands of Africa’s wildlife just vanishing off the face of the earth each year, we have compiled a list of the most endangered animals in Africa and where you can still go to see them in their natural habitats:
The Black Rhino
The black rhino is the most endangered animal in Africa and is ranked “critically endangered” due to extreme hunting and poaching due to the extreme demand for rhino horn in the world. At the moment there are quite a few Game Reserves that are still dedicated to saving the black rhino and although the numbers are falling fast, they are still there.
From £2,620 including flights. Activities include monitoring elephants and their relationships with predators, developing identification cards for bulls and breeding herds, recording population numbers, age and gender structure of herds, and noting herd dynamics of around 1,200 elephants free-roaming the Tuli Block.
That means visitors won’t experience the scrum of Toyota Land Cruisers that often marks a big-game sighting in the Maasai Mara National Reserve – which also bans the game walks that are a highlight of a visit to Mahali Mzuri. The goal of the conservancy is “low density, high-value tourism”.
Serengeti is renowned for its black-maned lion and other predators including wild dog, spotted hyena, jackal, cheetah and leopard. The wealth of birdlife is of a special interest including colorful rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers and sunbirds and a large number of birds of prey.
They are an amazing animal that doesn’t really get enough attention on regular safaris. The largest antelope in South Africa, they can weigh up to 840kgs – as much as a smallish black rhino, and they can vault a 2 metre fence from a standing start. Out on game drive we spent a bit of time with a nice herd of eland. Sanbona makes you work a bit harder for your game: there’s less of it about, and there are less people on the ground looking for it. Still, we saw more than enough game to keep me happy. It started with the Verreaux’s Eagle that was soaring above the ridge outside our tented suite (more on the suite later!
There’s a cosy bar, too, complete with telescope for star-gazing. Steps lead down to the valley floor, past a dazzling infinity pool, to the Nasaro spa tent (the signature treatment is a “healing journey” involving rose quartz and amethyst). During last weekend’s preview visit, there was a general sense of relief that a steep learning curve was being successfully negotiated on a box-fresh property. Operations manager Liam Breedveld (Tarn’s younger brother) sees to it that sumptuous meals are conjured up: risottos, complicated salads, slow-roasted beef, all served by welcoming Maasai staff.”I take it no one got that? We’d all instinctively reached for them, but not one of us had got a decent shot. First lesson of wildlife photography: be ready for anything, at all times! I had in fact been attempting to shoot with the lens cap on. Paul’s laughter broke the stunned silence. ” Lesson number two was a breakdown of things to check on our cameras in preparation for action – from battery power and space on our memory cards, to manual settings in order to ensure that focus, exposure and shutter speed would always work in the moment.
We ambled along a dusty track, trunk-in-hand, for 15 minutes. Then I took Morula for a walk. We learnt about their greeting rituals, family lives, physiology, and evolution, and their vital role as eco-engineers, preventing bush encroachment. If I quickened my pace, she came with me, gentle and eager to please. If I slowed down, she did too. “Keep your hand flat, palm up, and she’ll put her trunk on it and walk with you,” Sandi advised.
The trip runs annually in autumn – 2015 dates to be confirmed. From £4,295, excluding flights. You’ll spend a night in an observatory, and explore this unique park where wildlife often wanders on to the beach. Researching elephant populations, Botswana

The clear bays are nurseries for mother and calves. Whales gather here every September to mate. The annual whale festival is on led by the world’s only “Whale Crier” who blows his horn at each sighting. Day 3 – We head to laid back Hermanus for a whale of a good time.
My own guide, Joseph Ole Koyie, a knowledgeable Maasai from the Sanctuary Olonana tented camp were I was staying, was also distressed. Built on a private stretch of the Mara just outside the reserve, Olonana is the embodiment of Kenya’s safari industry wish-list. It is astoundingly beautiful, ecologically conscious and respectful of its wider role in conservation. Throughout four days, I never felt I was intruding on the migration’s natural flow.
After dusk, at the major camp sites which are located close to the watering holes, you can witness many animals settling down for water, mating and the occasional tussling endeavors. You can enjoy these experiences at night from the comforts of your campsite.
The first morning we woke up in the hostel we roused ourselves from bed prior the rising of the sun. We had a van to catch. We groggily, yet excitedly loaded into the van and make our way to Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Center where Mike had scheduled for us (and four accompanying friends) a sunrise walk with Cheetahs!

Born Linna Eleanor Yeager in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania in 1929, she was named after her mother and nicknamed Bunny to avoid confusion. She stopped photographing glamour models and considered the raunchier pictorial content that Playboy and Penthouse published in the Seventies and Eighties “kind of smutty. An only child, she shared her mother’s interest in Hollywood movie stars and began dreaming of a modelling career, especially after the family moved to Miami in 1946.

However, anyone who owns a cat will tell you they are perverse and occasionally frustrating creatures, and this cheetah was no exception: for some reason he decided not to pounce, but to slink off into the darkness. Excitement in the game drive vehicle rose to fever pitch – all of us, ranger included, were certain we were about to witness a dramatic chase, and in all probability a kill (I’ve never seen one before).
But the search for food and water by 1. 5 million wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson’s gazelle, 200,000 zebra and 18,000 eland, along with a quarter of a million other residents that include lions, leopards, cheetahs and other predators, means the seasonal route from Tanzania into Kenya necessitates that the migrating herds will at some point risk their lives as they cross the Mara. The five of us suck in air and hold it in a collective gasp, as a bat-eared fox becomes hunting practice for the cheeky youngsters. We take a second to recover, then look down at our cameras. They skid, swiping at the terrified animal before it manages to leap down into its den.

The more I tried, the more new styles and solutions I began to discover for every photographic situation that occurred. Never in my life have I been as brave as I was on this trip, and it had nothing to do with sleeping within earshot of the up-curved whoops of a pack of hyenas; it was all about trying out new photography ideas.
Later we visited the Elephant sanctuary for a hands on interactive educational tour. I didn’ know African elephants could be tamed like Asian or Indian. We learned that no other creature is as understanding as the elephant which can learn, remember, meditate and conceive such things man can hardly perform.

When we experience endangered species “in the flesh” we appreciate them and how rare it is. This can lead to efforts to conserve them. Is it more harmful than helpful? What is your opinion regarding this type of tourism or tourist activity? What is your opinion on this type of “Wildlife Tourism”
Helpful. Or is the experience helpful in raising in awareness?
On the following morning, we descended into the crater just as the sun seemed to be climbing out of it – and all the wonder I’ve witnessed in endless wildlife documentaries was revealed in vivid reality. As we were so near to the equator, the sun came up fast, and we had to be ready for the constantly changing light.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sanbona, and now when I’m asked if it’s possible to combine Cape Town with a convenient safari destination, I know exactly what the answer is: Sanbona!
Written by Tepilit Ole Saitoti. After deep reflection on my people and culture, I have painfully come to accept that the Maasai must change to protect themselves, if not their culture . It is better to meet an enemy out in the open and to be prepared for him than him to come upon you at home unawares. They must adapt to the realities of the modern world for the sake of their own survival .
As well as the hands-on experience students will attend weekly lectures on conservation, which include plenty of information from subjects as diverse as the biomes that make up the cheetah’s natural habitat to presentations on the genetic makeup of the king cheetah. “I worked with the minimum equipment. Her interest in the photographic process grew out of necessity as she tried to cut down the cost of duplicating her portfolio. She enrolled at night-school and quickly moved from darkroom printing to using a Rolleiflex or a Speed Graphic.
An African Safari scheduled to coincide with this event is one that you are not likely to forget. During the months of May and June, Lake Ndutu at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands, is the starting point for one of the great natural wonders of nature – the famous annual migration. Nearly 2 million wildebeests and a quarter of a million zebra move in winding columns several miles in length towards the Maasai Mara.
The Morani arrested for hunting lions and prevented from building manyattas for the eunoto transition in which they pass into elder hood, have kept most of the superficial marks of the warrior without being able to live the life fully. Many men preserve with their warrior hood, though modern Kenya makes few concessions to it.
Hundreds of elephants came each afternoon to drink and frolic in the mud. Their giant footsteps were silent, but their gentle rumblings and quiet majesty were enough to get my attention. For two hours, they mooched around pulling up grass as they headed to the river.
As I sat on my terrace at Sanctuary’s beautiful Chilwero Lodge on the Park’s border, around 100 elephants sauntered past just beyond the fence.

It’s one thing sticking your 400mm lens as close as you can get to a lion, entirely another taking a 50mm and standing right up in someone’s face, as a gawky voyeur. We left Ndutu after three days, crossing the vast open spaces of the southern Serengeti to the Nduara Loliondo camp, an exquisite little spot surrounded by those quintessentially African umbrella acacias and kopjes; elegant yurts served as the dining room and bar area. By contrast, Chobe National Park, covering 10,500 square kilometres of Botswana’s north-east corner, is the country’s busiest park for both visitors and elephants, whose population wavers between 45,000 and 80,000 depending on migration patterns.
Walk this way: Kirisia Hillsn (Tui De Roy/Roving Tortoise Photos) Doug introduced us to Thembi. ” Using Thembi as his model, Doug explained an elephant’s unique features: the intricacies of their trunks, which are “like having your nose on your fingertips”, their six sets of molars, the unusual third eyelid-type membrane that flits across their eyes. This year is all about diving with crocodiles and in South Africa’s Cango Wildlife Ranch you can do just that.

It’s easy to become blase when one of the much-hyped “big five” (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard) isn’t eyeballing you at arms length-but those are the hunters trophies. The topi are peculiarly characteristic of Maasai Mara, and there are always one or two in every herd standing sentry on a grass tussock or an old termite mound. Among all these outstanding characters, the herds of humble grazers can quickly fade into the background. Warthog families like rows of dismantled Russian dolls, Zebra, and gazelle, odd-looking hartebeest and slick, purple-flanked topi are all scattered with abandon across the scene. The reserve also has rare herds of roan antelope- swaggering ,horse-sized animals with sweeping ,curved horns, that you’ll see elsewhere only in Ruma National Park near Lake Victoria .

Studies suggest they are just as effective at hunting as their normal cousins, contrary to received wisdom that suggests their colour makes it easier for prey to spot them.Fridge Magnets by AndyPocheetahs in Namibia See all 7 photos cheetahs in Namibia Cheetahs in Africa Fridge MagnetBig Cats in NamibiaOne of my favourite photos from many years of wildlife photography. It was however, incredibly impressive as we walked chamber to chamber in massive dry caverns which are a mere 800,000 years old. Our final stop was the famous UNESCO Cango Caves, Arica’s largest show cave. I nearly opted out of going as I’m not a cave woman.
Although we’re pretty certain that this shop doesn’t stock Hermes you may be able to pick yourself up a nice replica. These birds move fast and can reach speeds of up to 60km/h so make sure you hold on tight! Whilst shopping draws the crowds, being able to ride an ostrich around the estate provides one of the most memorable experiences. Ostrich leather is still fashionable nowadays and used to create the much lusted after Hermes Birkin handbags. Visiting an ostrich farm is a fascinating way to learn more about how South Africa’s rich lived, but also gives you a rare opportunity to purchase ostrich feathers and ostrich leather goods. Ostrich feathers were once high-fashion among certain ladies of nobility and the so-called feather boom resulted in decadent palaces being built on the grounds where ostriches roamed.
Heavy rains falling up on the Mau Range where the river rises can produce a brown flood that claims thousands of animals as they try to cross. Heaps of bloated carcasses line the banks: injured and dying animals struggle in the mud: while vultures and marabou stork’s squat in glazed, post-prandial stupor. Like huge sheep (they are, in fact, most closely related to goats), the brainless masses swarm desperately to the banks and plunge in. Many are fatally injured on rocks and fallen branches; others are skewered by flailing legs and horns. The Mara River is the biggest obstacle they come up against . With every surge, more bodies bob to the surface and float downstream.

Currently, however, it has lost even its “Asiatic” prefix as it is mainly concentrated in Iran and, hence, is commonly known as “Iranian Cheetah”. Besides, the loss and degradation of their habitat contributed to their complete elimination from India by the middle of the last century. The Asiatic Cheetah (sub species: Acinonyx Jubatus Venaticus) earlier used to be largely known as “Indian Cheetah”. Extinction of the species in India made it lose the “Indian” prefix. Over time, however, the animals were mercilessly hunted down – like lions and tigers.

Mid winter is believed to be the peak breeding season for the cats even though they have been documented to mate year round. Independence is probably reached at eighteen months. Lifespan is up to twelve to fourteen years. Not much is known about the reproductive profile of Asiatic Cheetah. Cheetahs are to an extent migratory cats and often move around in search for prey. Once widely shot for its fur, the cheetah now suffers more from the loss of both habitat and prey.
Focused on controlling hunting and preserving the ecology of the area, Kruger National Park lacks the fences and barriers popular throughout the region prior to 1990, allowing the wildlife to thrive. Perhaps, it was felt that belonging to the same sub-species, the Iranian cheetahs will have a greater chance of survival in Indian conditions. It seems, the idea had to be abandoned because the Iranian cheetahs are critically endangered and withdrawal of even a few from the acutely limited stock would threaten the survival of the species. Reports had earlier appeared about India’s keenness to relocate a few Iranian cheetahs in reserves that are found suitable for them. The country, therefore had to take recourse of procuring them from Africa where most of the game parks – and there are surfeit of them mostly located South of Sahara – have cheetahs in good numbers.

Christine Breitenmoser, the co-chair of the IUCN/SCC Cat Specialist Group, which determines the conservation status of wild cats around the world, said West African lions have unique genetic sequences not found in any other lions, including in zoos or captivity – making their conservation “even more urgent”. Big Five experience, Big Five lodge, Big Five tea towel: it’s everywhere. And scholars will probably explain how “Five” is hard-wired into our cultural psyche, from the wounds of Christ to the pillars of Islam. It is not, of course, just about size – a leopard is dwarfed by a giraffe or hippo – but was coined by white hunters to describe those creatures most dangerous to hunt on foot. But why must this expression become the raison d’être of the African safari? Our obsession with “Big” doubtless has some Freudian explanation.

Jabulani is a giant, measuring three and a half metres to his shoulder – more than twice my height – and I felt tiny standing beside him in the heart of the Botswana bush. As he sniffed my skin, his warm, whiffy breath and the wiry hairs on his trunk brushed my arm, making me giggle like a child. Being tickled by an elephant is a surreal sensation. His huge, milky white tusks were cool to the touch and as smooth as polished glass, curving to the sky in a sweeping arc. To Jabulani (affectionately called Jabu) they’re simply tools to help him in his daily life, but to poachers they’re worth millions. However, South Africa has become a major tourist destination in recent years, especially for families, due to the wide range of well-organized and maintained wildlife preserves in and around the region known as Kruger National Park. With a lemming-like instinct, the herds gather in their hundreds of thousands in May and June on the withering plains of Serengeti to begin the long, streaming journey northwards, following the scent of moisture and green grass in the Mara. It is the annual wildebeest migration; however, that has planted Maasai Mara so firmly in the popular imagination. Never the most graceful of animals, wildebeest seem to play up to their appearance with unpredictable behavior: bucking like wild horses, springing like jack-in-the boxes, or suddenly sprinting off through the herd for no apparent reason. They arrive in July and August, pouring over the Sand River and into the Sekenani side of the reserve, gradually munching their way westwards towards the escarpment in a milling, unsettled mass, and turning south again, back to the Serengeti, in October .

For the visitor, meanwhile, the list sets a rather bullying agenda. Who’s to say which beasts most deserve your attention? Big Five or not, the profusion of wildlife on any African safari is jaw-dropping. Entire countries lose out because they fall one short: Zambia, for instance, has the best walking safaris in Africa but – horror! A design in the epitome of pace, Cheetah outruns everything on the plains of Africa, establishing itself as one of the most successful hunters in family felidae. Honed to a sleek and slender physique Cheetah ranges in weight from 100 to 150 lbs, with its long body and tail assisting it in high speed pursuits. Although not included in big cats by many experts owing to its inability to roar, Cheetah is one of the most envied big game predators in the wild, arousing frequent backlash by lions and leopards who often find themselves unable to compete with Cheetah’s hunting prowess. Built for speed, Cheetah is one of the most fascinating of all animals.

There are only 200 of them left in South Africa and that’s only in captivity. The harsh reality is that the next generation and generations after that will not be able to see a real tiger in its natural habitat.

Yeager thought the pictures might be perfect for a calendar, but instead sent them to Hugh Hefner, who had launched the men’s magazine Playboy the previous year. Page became known as “the Queen of Pinups”, “the Girl with the Perfect Figure”, “Dark Marilyn” and “the Temptress from Tennessee”, while Yeager went on to photograph several more Playmates for Hefner, including Lisa Winters, Marianne Gaba, Myrna Weber, Joyce Nizzari, Cindy Fuller and Sandra Settani.

In the early years of the colony, Governor Delameres obsession with the people and all things Maasai spawned a new term ” Maasai -it is” , and with it a motley crop of romantic notions about their ancestors ,alluding to ancient Egypt and Rome, and even to the lost tribes of Israel.

Very family friendly, there is very little to scare the little ones. Narration is informative, though it tends to personify the animals a bit too much. But overall the effect isn’t too strong, and the compelling stories of the large African cats makes for great viewing. 0 Very family friendly, though some children may become sad when finding out their favorite cheetah cub didn’t make it. A very nice series on African wildlife, another of my personal favorites. 0 Great documentary overall, the main objection being the over personification of the animals, but this helps draw the viewer in. Overall this is a very good documentary, though it does tend to humanize the animals a bit too much in my opinion, but I’m just old school. This ‘docu-drama’ tells the story of a lioness who is forced from her homeland by another lion pride, and covers her struggles to survive and raise her cubs. 8-A bit ‘dramatic’ for old school documentaries fans, but very solid none-the less. The narration is decent, and the background music is very well done. And the plot-like storyline will appeal to children. The Last LionsThe Last Lions is a very good documentary. Great family viewing with older children, the story is vaguely reminiscent of The Lion King. 0 Some killing scenes, but nothing too gruesome. Overall this is another very good wildlife documentary.Ostrich leather is still fashionable nowadays and used to create the much lusted after Hermes Birkin handbags.
